Prepare your exceptional trip to Madagascar with peace of mind using our comprehensive guide

Your Complete Checklist

Make sure you've prepared everything to experience an unforgettable adventure on the Red Island. Follow our expert recommendations for a worry-free journey.

Documents & Formalities

Valid passport

Verify that your passport is valid for at least 6 months after your scheduled return date. Keep a digital and paper copy in your luggage.

Tourist visa

The visa is obtained on arrival at Antananarivo airport (approximately €35-40 for 30 days). Bring cash in euros. Electronic visa available in advance.

Flight tickets

Print your flight confirmations (round-trip) and keep them accessible. Also download your mobile boarding passes.

Travel insurance

Purchase insurance covering medical expenses, repatriation, and cancellation. Keep emergency contact numbers in your phone.

Vaccination record

No vaccines are mandatory, but some are highly recommended (see Health section). Bring your international vaccination certificate.

Health & Wellness

Recommended vaccinations

Consult your doctor 4-6 weeks before departure: Hepatitis A and B, Typhoid, Rabies (if visiting rural areas), updated DTP. Yellow fever not required unless coming from a risk country.

Anti-malaria treatment

Malaria is present in certain regions. Consult a doctor for appropriate preventive treatment. Also bring mosquito repellent (50% DEET).

Personal medical kit

Regular medications, anti-diarrhea medicine, painkillers, bandages, disinfectant, water purification tablets, high-protection sunscreen (SPF 50+).

Sun protection

The tropical sun is intense. Bring a wide-brimmed hat, UV sunglasses, water-resistant sunscreen, and protective lip balm.

Important to know

Tap water is not drinkable in Madagascar. Drink only bottled water with sealed caps or purified water. Avoid ice cubes and raw foods in non-certified establishments.

Luggage & Equipment

Suitable clothing

Favor lightweight cotton and breathable garments. Bring covering outfits to respect local culture and protect yourself from the sun. A light sweater for cool evenings in the highlands.

Hiking shoes

Sturdy and comfortable walking shoes are essential. Also bring closed sandals for water activities and flip-flops for relaxation.

Lightweight rainwear

A poncho or compact waterproof jacket is essential, even during the dry season. Tropical showers can occur at any time.

Electronic equipment

Power adapters (type C and E), power banks, headlamp or flashlight, waterproof bags to protect your devices from humidity.

Daypack

A 20-30L bag for your daily excursions: reusable water bottle, snacks, camera, sun protection, swimsuit.

Finance & Practical

Local currency

The currency is the Malagasy Ariary (MGA). Exchange your euros at the airport or at exchange offices in town. Credit cards work in major cities but bring cash.

Bank cards

Notify your bank of your trip. ATMs are available in main cities. Prioritize withdrawals in secure banks.

Daily budget

Plan a budget for tips (guides, drivers), souvenirs, extra drinks, and optional activities. Allow approximately €20-30 per day for extras.

Document copies

Scan all your important documents (passport, visa, tickets, insurance) and email them to yourself. Also leave a copy with a loved one.

Communication & Connectivity

Local SIM card

Buy a prepaid SIM card at the airport (operators: Telma, Orange, Airtel). Data plans are economical and practical for staying connected.

Useful apps

Download Maps.me (offline maps), Google Translate (Malagasy pack), weather apps, and WhatsApp to communicate easily.

Emergency contacts

Save the numbers for your embassy, travel insurance, local guide, and loved ones. Keep them accessible offline.

Expert Tips

A few valuable tips to enrich your Malagasy experience

1

Learn a few words

Salama (hello), Misaotra (thank you), Veloma (goodbye). These small gestures will touch your Malagasy hosts.

2

Respect the "fady"

These sacred taboos vary by region. Your guide will inform you of local prohibitions that must be absolutely respected.

3

Adopt the "mora mora"

The Malagasy philosophy of "slowly, slowly". Slow down, enjoy the present moment, and savor each experience.

4

Photograph with respect

Always ask permission before photographing people. A smile and a few words are enough.

5

Responsible travel

Support local artisans, limit plastic use, respect wildlife and flora. Your impact matters.

6

Be flexible

Unexpected events are part of the journey. Difficult roads, unpredictable weather... Keep your sense of humor and enjoy the adventure!
